FAQ

What is systemic enzyme therapy?

It is the therapeutic use of natural enzymes, like serrapeptase, to support joint, muscle, and tissue health.* Systemic enzymes are best absorbed in the small intestine where they enter the bloodstream and execute their effects on the entire body as a system.

Why is it important to take serrapeptase on an empty stomach?

Systemic enzymes must bypass the stomach to gain access to the small intestine, where they have optimal absorption. If taken with food, they may start breaking down your food within the stomach, rather than passing through to the small intestine which compromises their absorption and effectiveness.

What is enteric coating and why is it important? Does your serrapeptase have an enteric coating and is it safe?

Enteric coating ensures systemic enzymes like serrapeptase can survive when passing through the acidic environment of the stomach to make it to the small intestine. Our serrapeptase has enteric coating made of the food-grade compound Methacrylic Acid Copolymer (MAAC), which is completely phthalate-free. It is gastro-resistant to withstand stomach acidity and considered GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe).

Is it important to measure serrapeptase by weight? How do you measure the potency of serrapeptase in one capsule?

The potency of the enzyme is the most crucial factor in determining how well it will work, and this is measured by activity not by weight. The most accurate unit of measure for serrapeptase is SPU, Serrapeptase Units. It is sometimes seen as SU.

Can I take serrapeptase with other systemic enzymes?

Systemic enzymes may be taken together, yielding desirable results, as long as they are taken on an empty stomach. In fact, it is often recommended that systemic enzymes be combined. Serrapeptase and AST Enzymes’ Serracor-NK often have synergistic effects when taken together. This means that the separate products work together to produce advantageous results. By combining and enhancing the activity of the enzymes, their effects on the healing process are more attainable.

Can I take serrapeptase with digestive enzymes?

Although digestive and systemic enzymes are not contraindicated in terms of ingredients, they cannot be taken simultaneously. The purpose of digestive enzymes is to aid in digestion of specific foods, so taking them with food is an obvious recommendation. Because systemic enzymes require an empty stomach for maximum absorption, they must be taken separately from digestive enzymes. There are no adverse interactions between systemic and digestive enzymes, but they serve different purposes and thus should be taken as directed for best results.

Does this product contain maltodextrin?

Yes, this product may contain trace amounts of maltodextrin. At AST Enzymes we have now listed maltodextrin as an ingredient on our labels as an effort to increase transparency. In the manufacturing process serrapeptase is in liquid form and must be put into solid form. This is necessary to help stabilize the enzymes to maintain optimal activity levels to work efficiently. The enzymes must be sprayed onto a carrier like maltodextrin to take the enzymes from liquid to powder.
